Raiders fly in for tourney
Some high-calibre squash will be served up in Bermuda over the coming weekend - and it's all for charity.
The Bermuda Squash Racquets Association will host the first annual Bermuda Truckfinders Charity Tournament from Friday to Sunday, featuring top players from the Island as well as from the United States. At present, about 100 people have registered to compete in the four Men's, three Ladies and two Junior divisions to be contested.
All proceeds from the tournament will go to the Bermuda Diabetic Association and juniors competing will be requesting donations from relatives, friends and other players. These monies will be added to be BDA's cause also. An incentive of a trip to a squash camp in Philadelphia in the summer is being offered to the junior with the largest donation.
"I would like to thank the Bermuda Truckfinders and the BSRA for choosing the Bermuda Diabetic Association as the beneficiary of these funds," said BDA president, Gordy Gibbons, as news of the charity event was made public.
Coordinator of Diabetes at King Edward Memorial Hospital Debbie Jones explained the funds will help with two programmes this year.
"The BDA will send 20 kids with Type 1 diabetes to a summer camp in Boston.
"Then, in November, they are planning a workshop in Bermuda for children with Type 2 diabetes in order to raise awareness of the connection between obesity and this disease," she said.
President of Bermuda Truckfinders, Eugene Bothello, noted his organisation was sponsoring the tournament not only to bring "great international squash" to the Island but also "to help benefit the local community".
Among those slated to compete in this event are former Bermuda professional, Dominic Hughes (currently the US National 40+ Champion), the BSRA's current professional Gary Plumstead, Bermuda Rosebowl representatives Tommy Sherratt and Denise Kyme, and juniors Stephen Smith and Justin Robinson. Cathryn Hindness who competed for Cayman Islands in the Rosebowl will also participate.
