Rally pair place 12th in World Cup

The Bermuda pair of Terry Reynolds and Mike Smith finished 12th out of 46 teams in the Trophy Cars section of the World Cup Rally 2002 which ended in Athens, Greece, yesterday.

The eight-stage event took the duo across Europe from London, England, to Athens in their 2002 Ford Focus.

They completed the 5,000 kilometre course in six days, 12 hours and 23 minutes and also landed third prize in the 1400cc engine class, behind two British teams.

The pair, who raced across France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia en route to their destination, began the rally on October 5 and actually finished racing on Tuesday, ahead of last night's awards ceremony in Athens.

Yesterday, Reynolds' wife told The Royal Gazette that her husband had telephoned her saying “make room for some more silverware”.

The Trophy Cars' section of the rally was won by Alastair Caldwell and Gill Cotton of the UK while another British team - Michael Darcey and Steve Hutchinson - were second overall and first in the 1400cc engine class.

There were also two other sections of the rally -Rally the World Cup 1600cc Trophy Cars and the Holden Classic Trophy Cars.
