Rangers put brakes on Hood title challenge

Despite being held to 1-1 draws, runaway league leaders Robin Hood and PHC Raiders maintained comfortable cushions atop their respective divisions following Commercial soccer action over the weekend.

Hood, defending A Division champions and still unbeaten, were denied maximum points against Key West Rangers at St.John's Field where a Craig Critchlow 73rd minute conversion saw the home team grab a share of the spoils.

The visitors had earlier appeared destined for their 11th win of the season after David Wolffe had given them a ninth minute lead.

Hood remain ten points clear of second-placed Tuff dogs with five matches remaining.

At BAA Field, the resurgent Tuff Dogs took a mighty bite out of North Village Rams' title hopes when they floored the visitors 4-1. No further information could be obtained on this match.

The result saw Tuff Dogs climb into second spot behind Hood while Rams slid back to third place in the table.

Also at BAA, BAA Wanderers edged relegation-bound Prison Officers 2-1. Martin Jones and Jahmall Mills scored for the home team while Donald Norford grabbed a late consolation for the visitors.

Elsewhere, St.George's All-Stars sprang the upset of the day, pasting MR Onions 4-1 at Lord's. Sinclair Smith emerged as the home team hero by grabbing all four of All-Stars goals. Steven Smith and Robert Horne replied for Onions who remain in fourth position.

At Shelly Bay, Lobster Pot picked up their fifth win of the season after shutting out Vasco Mariners 2-0. A seventh minute Stephen Rosney strike and a late insurance goal by Colin James was all it took to serve Mariners with their eighth loss of the season.

In the B Division, PHC Raiders were held to a 1-1 draw at Somerset Cricket Club against Extros. Workhorse Sammy Swan managed to breach the home side's defence and force his team ahead early in the second half. However, it only took Extros nine minutes to equalise through speedy forward Everette Wellman.

Both teams had further chances to convert, but in the end had to be content with a share of the spoils. Raiders remain 11 points clear of nearest rivals Devonshire All-Stars.

Second-placed All-Stars encountered less difficulty over the weekend when they were awarded maximum points at Shelly Bay after fast fading Dockyard Falcons turned up with only six players.

The same scenario also unfolded at Devonshire Recreation Club where Somerset Eagles received all three points against Devonshire Lions after the home team failed to show. Eagles soared into third spot.

Elsewhere in B Division action, Pest Control crushed Wolves Pack 8-1 at Lord's. Troy Crockwell bagged his seventh and eighth goals of the season along with George Braithwaite who also walked away with an impressive pair. Others contributing in Wolves' demise were Luvoney Smith, `keeper Stephen Watts, Kenneth Francis and Henry Young.

Valley and Prospect/Fire played to a 1-1 draw at White Hill Field.

Troy Furbert gave Prospect/Fire a 68th minute lead but all the player's hard work was undone shortly after when Valley substitute McDonald Simmons equalised.

Commercial action continues this weekend with Robin Hood and North Village Rams poised to square off in Saturday's feature match at Bernard Park.
