Rec. just can?t keep up with the Joneses
The father and son combination of Olin and Malachi Jones wreaked havoc with the ball at Devonshire Recreation Club over the weekend.
The pair shared 16 wickets between them to propel unbeaten Southampton Rangers to an eight-wicket triumph over Devonshire and a first Two Day League victory of the season.
Teenaged all-rounder Malachi Jones seized overall match figures of ten for 58, including seven maidens, while father Olin grabbed six for 43 with six maidens.
The pair accounted for every Devonshire wicket to fall in the second innings.
Winning the toss, Devonshire opted to bat on what appeared to be a tame strip. However, they might have soon rued their decision as Malachi Jones and veteran Ryan Belboda had the home team wobbling on the canvas at 51 for six.
Although Pele Thomas (14), Derek Brangman (24 not out) and Dennis Williams (13) battled bravely against a varied Rangers attack in an attempt to stabilise their team?s innings, posting a challenging total for Rangers to chase after was always going to be a tall order, especially when Olin Jones came on as first change and mopped up the home team?s tail in 18 deliveries.
Belboda finished with two for 38 and Keith Wainwright one for eight off two overs. Devonshire were dismissed in only 34 overs for a paltry 83 runs.
Having seized the early initiative, Rangers cruised to a challenging 234 for nine in reply with teenaged Ramen Wijewardena scoring a patient 48 off 85 balls, Chris Jackson 35, Don Milroy 32 and Olin Jones 27.
Wijewardena stroked eight fours during his 70 minute stay at the crease while the unorthodoxed Jackson smashed three fours and a six, Milroy three fours and two sixes and Jones two fours and a six.
Dean Stephens and Ricky Brangman Jr. ? taking the weekend off from behind the stumps ? took three for 37 and three for 36 respectively while Jodi Maroni, Lamont Brangman and Derek Brangman grabbed one apiece.
Deputising wicketkeeper Nathan Darrell gloved two catches behind and executed two stumpings in the match.
With one wicket in hand, Rangers declared their first innings at 5.05 p.m. with a lead of 151 runs. Devonshire were poised at 52 without loss with Ricky Brangman Jr and Thomas unbeaten at the crease at close of play.
Openers Ricky Brangman Jr (54) and Thomas (51) ? who together put on 91 runs for the first wicket ? added 39 runs during yesterday?s morning session before Olin Jones had the latter bowled.
What followed Thomas? dismissal nearly defies logic as Devonshire lost their next six batsmen in the space of three runs, tumbling from 122 for two to 125 for eight with the Jones? now in full stride with their medium pace and off-break variations.
Thomas hit five fours and three sixes and Brangman nine fours in his top knock before Olin Jones had him snapped up by Curtis Jackson.
Dennis Williams (37 not out) and Marcus Astwood (14) were the only other Devonshire batsmen in double figures. Williams stroked five fours and two sixes.
Malachi Jones finished with six wickets for 33 runs while father Olin took four for 41 off 12 overs, including four maidens.
Devonshire were dismissed in their second innings for 163, leaving Rangers only requiring 13 runs for victory.
Don Milroy (one) and Justin Wade (four) secured victory for Southampton ? who lost the wickets of Wijewardena and Stephen Dill cheaply ? at 1.15 p.m.
