Reds heading to the greens
FA Cup finalists North Village will swap their football studs for golf spikes on Sunday.
While Devonshire Cougars and Dandy Town will battle it out at BAA Field to determine who will meet the Reds in the April 9 final at the National Sports Centre (NSC), members of Village?s Premier Division squad will indulge in a round of golf at Horizons in Paget.
Team members will then gather at the Warwick home of coach Dwayne (Streaker) Adams for supper.
Village annihilated Hamilton Parish at Southampton Oval last Sunday to book a tenth overall FA Cup final appearance.
And as reward for their dominant display against Hot Peppers, coach Adams gave his charges the night off last Tuesday.
Coach Adams, however, was due to hold a training session at Bernard Park last night
Village, who edged Parish in last year?s final at the NSC, are gunning for a first triple crown championship (league, Friendship Trophy and FA Cup) since 1977-78.
?I thought the guys deserved a little break because it has been a long season for us and they could certainly use a bit of time off to rest,? coach Adams said. ?And we do have some players who have minor injuries.?
Adams said Sunday?s round of golf will help keep his players in a good shape mentally.
?I don?t want to kill my players, we?re just playing over nine holes,? he added. ?It?s all part of our preparation and more rest than anything else because it has been a long year for us having competed in all of the major cup competitions.?
As for the all the hype surrounding the triple crown, Adams said: ?All the talk means nothing to us right now. It would be good to accomplish it, but that can only be achieved if we can win the FA Cup. So we still have some work cut out for us.?
And some of that work entails a very intense training schedule for next week before the team retreats to an undisclosed hotel.
Adams confirmed Village will train next Tuesday and Thursday.
The coach will also have a full roster to choose from next weekend as all of his players managed not to get sent off or accumulate yellow cards.
And most importantly: ?Our players are healthy and all looking forward to next weekend?s final,? Adams said. ?And everyone is focused on the task now at hand.?
