Renegades claim first title of year in style
Renegades kept up their winning ways from last year with a clean sweep of all their matches at the Sandy?s Boat Club 15-a-side Tournament last weekend in Dockyard.
Last season?s League and Cup winners didn?t concede any points in defeating Police 29-0, Teachers 5-0 and second-place finishers Mariners 12-0 to kick off the 2005-2006 Bermuda Rugby Football Union?s season.
Renegades? scrum half Tom Healy was the day?s top point scorer with three tries and his side?s dominance was helped by single tries from Mike Baker, Rod Stewart, John Hurn, Colin Targett and Paul Jones.
Hurn added two conversions and Darragh O?Donoghue added one conversion to help boost the winning side?s scoring rate which could have been even higher if not for some early season rustiness which saw scoring opportunities squandered.
Mariners showed a promising start to the season with their second place finish in the tournament.
The side, which has been denied more success in past years by a lack of consistency, started off with back to back wins over Teachers (7-5) and Police (19-5) through solid performances by their forwards but could not keep the effort up against the Renegades.
Top scorer for Mariners was Ed Kitchen with two tries. Rob Morgan and James Bergl each crossed the line once and Pears Carr and Stewart Thomson added two and one conversions respectively.
Last season?s league runners up and losing cup finalists Teachers started their season off on the wrong foot with a sole 10-0 victory over Police.
Ben Cooper, David Porter and Kurt Leibel each scored a try for the Reds on the day.
Police, who started their season last year by winning this tournament, were missing many key figures from a season ago and could only manage a solo score through a Paul Marsden try against Mariners.
