Resurgent Rams revel in glory of Trojans drubbing

Kentoine Jennings

Veteran North Village defender Kentoine Jennings is still at a loss for words following his team?s 5-0 peppering of Somerset Trojans in the West End last week.

The defending Premier Division champions silenced the critics by producing their biggest win ever against Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club in their last outing ? a result that sent shock waves reverberating throughout the league.

?That was absolutely stunning,? was how Jennings described the lopsided result yesterday.

?I always thought we could go up there (Somerset) and steal a win ? but never by five clear goals.

?I thought Somerset would be even harder to beat in their own back yard and when I heard the final score I actually called several people just to make sure I was hearing things correct. I didn?t believe it at first.?

Village host Blazers this Sunday in a crunch match at Bernard Park knowing that a win or loss could either make or break their bid for an eighth league championship.

The Reds presently trail cross-town rivals Boulevard by two-points.

But despite last weekend?s convincing win in the West End, Jennings cautioned his team-mates over becoming complacent.

?Because we beat Somerset 5-0, we can?t necessarily say that we are going to beat Boulevard. We are heading home and playing well, but I think it?s going to be difficult game against Boulevard on Sunday,? said Jennings, who bowed out of international football last November.

?I would give us the edge because we are playing at home. But it wouldn?t be too much of an edge because Boulevard are a team that can play. And if you don?t show up prepared to play on the day, then things can happen.

?But it?s now crunch time for Boulevard to maintain their lead, and crunch time for us to try and catch them.?

With only three matches remaining in the league season, Village appear to be peaking when it matters most and could be further bolstered by the unexpected early return of key playmaker Keith Jennings, who has miraculously recovered from a serious back injury to rejoin his team mates in practice.

Meanwhile, with their pride shattered, Trojans have gone about picking up the pieces this week knowing that they will now have to depend on others in order to clinch an unprecedented tenth league title.

?The guys have talked about Sunday?s loss and realise there are still more games left to play,? Somerset chairman of football Josef Gooden said.

?Obviously they are a bit disappointed, but they also realise it?s a matter of going back to drawing board and looking forward to achieving better results on Sunday.?

Trojans, who have a game in hand over Blazers and Village will look to take out any remaining frustration on league whipping-boys St.David?s at Somerset Cricket Club on Sunday.

The two clubs drew 1-1 at Lords last October.

?We have to do what we have to do. We have to prepare ourselves to battle,? Gooden added.

?And if the guys can bear down, then we will be able to accomplish our goal which is to claim three points.?

Apart from Boulevard, Trojans are the only other team to top the pile this season ? albeit for a brief 24-hour spell.

Bermuda?s national football team, currently preparing for next week?s tour matches against New England Revolution and LA Galaxy, moved up three spots this month in FIFA?s world rankings to now occupy the 118th position.

The national team held their fifth training session inside of a week last night at the National Sports Centre (NSC), with team members scheduled to attend a technical meeting tomorrow night with interim coach Kenny Thompson.

Bermuda take on the Revs on February 20 and the Galaxy on February 23 at the Sports Centre.
