Revolution keen on Bermuda return

Despite having to play in unsuitable weather conditions in front of a near empty National Sports Centre (NSC), the New England Revolution have given the Island the thumbs up.

Terming last week?s two-match tour of Bermuda as an ?unqualified? success, Revolution spokesman Brad Feldman hopes his team can return to Bermuda early next year for pre-season warm ups against local opposition.

The US Major League Soccer (MLS) side went undefeated while on tour, edging out a local select 2-1 and Kyle Lightbourne?s national team 3-2 at the NSC.

The MLS Eastern Conference side are to due to depart for Ecuador on Friday for a four-match pre-season tour.

?If there was any knock on the trip then we just wish the weather had been a little bit better so that the coaches could have gotten? out on the golf course a couple more times,? Feldman told from Boston.

?But at the end of the day the rain and wind seemed to die down and our training sessions and matches were not adversely affected.?

Feldman also thanked local promoters, Setplay, Bermuda Football Association (BFA) and Pompano Beach Club for what he termed as ?first class? treatment during his team?s brief stopover.

?I?m not exaggerating when I say we felt that our treatment from front to back was first class,? he added. ?The promoters really had their finger on the pulse all the time and I wish them future success and hope we can work with them as a club again in the future.

?I also extend thanks to the BFA for putting their blessing on the trip and for the two games at the stadium.?

But it was what transpired on the actual football pitch which seems to have pleased Feldman most.

?It was a success and a great way for us to get competition to start the season off,? he said.

?I think we really got to see certain players step it up. And over the course of three nights ? not only did we see who was comfortable out there and who had the legs ? but we also deduced whom Steve Nicol (Revolution coach) fancies at this stage of the game.?

Feldman then singled out a few local players who caught the eye of the Revolution?s coaching staff.

?There were certainly some individual talent on display. You could see Keith Jennings? class in the middle of the park, Gregory Johnson has a future along with the two ?keepers in both matches (Cymande Davis and Timmy Figureido).

?I thought Kyle (Lightbourne) put out a real organised side and the two strikers (Shaun Goater and Khano Smith) and Domico Coddington were obviously good players. The Bermuda national team obviously sat in and looked to hit on the break, and that was a good test for the Revolution and I think we showed that we can play a cultured passing game on the floor.?

Feldman also credited Premier Division champions Dandy Town who the visitors thrashed 7-0 in a practice match at the NSC.

?That was a tough situation for them to come in right after work without one of their best players (Khano Smith),? he noted.

?I think the score was unfortunate because I don?t think the Revs wanted to embarrass Dandy Town. But it was good for our younger players to go against a team that?s obviously athletic and has had success in the Premier Division in Bermuda.

?To have that kind of attacking output in one day reminds the guys of the work they have to put in as professionals. If Dandy Town trained as professionals then I?m sure some of those guys would be sharper on a day-to-day basis.

?And we appreciated Dandy Town giving us the game and I think all three games were beneficial and worthwhile in their own way.?

If there was one player among the Revolution?s team roster who surpassed expectations on tour, then it might have been 6ft striker Jamie Holmes who bagged five goals in two matches.

Revolution captain Shalrie Joseph also proved to be a vital cog in the visitor?s midfield in both matches.

?I think Holmes surprised some people scoring five goals in two days,? said Feldman.

?I think he made an impression although he?s not a cultured striker yet. But it?s clear that he?s a natural striker who uses his size very well and can get a hard shot on goal without a big window of opportunity ? and those kinds of numbers open coaches? eyes.

?So now I think he?s going to get a lot of time playing for the reserve team which will give him the opportunity to develop to the professional level. And with that kind of finishing ability who knows . . . the sky is the limit.?

Feldman now hopes the Revolution can return next year during their pre-season build up.

?The tone and talks when we left were very positive,? he said. ?Certainly we felt that something could be possible in the future . . . maybe on an expanded basis.

?And overall I think the promoters did well and we would like to be part of it, if possible, in the future.?
