Riders bounce back

Bermuda's young equestrian team of Kyle Hassell and Stephanie Wilkinson have both impressed during the third round of the Caribbean Junior Jumping Competition in Trinidad.

Competing against riders from Barbados and the host country, the local pair got off to a poor start on the first day of the two-day event when they were eliminated in the first round with a score of 60 penalties each.

However, they bounced back superbly in the second round when the received only four penalties.

And in the third round on the second day they both went clear, leaving them with a total of 64 penalties.

Hassell had a slightly faster overall time than Wilkinson, leaving them in fourth and fifth place overall as individuals.

In the team standings they were second behind Trinidad but ahead of Barbados.

In a final speed competition, which did not count for team points, Hassell finished first with Wilkinson second.

The two riders, accompanied by coach Nick DeCosta, were competing in their first overseas CEA Jumping Competition.

The next round, which also involves teams from Cayman and Jamaica, was scheduled to be held in Bermuda on September 20 and 21 but due to the extensive damage caused to the National Equestrian Centre on Vesey Street by Hurricane Fabian it has been postponed until either October or November.
