Rivals irked by ?local boy?s? wildcard entry

Nick Kyme?s wildcard entry produced an unforgettable match against Peter Nicol on the first day of the Bermuda Open ? and it wasn?t just unforgettable for Kyme.

?The whole squash universe have their opinions on whether or not I should have got that wildcard,? said Kyme, whose inclusion in the main draw was the cause of much political to-ing and fro-ing ahead of the tournament.

?I have had a lot of stick about it from a lot of people. There were a couple of message boards where fans and some players anonymously wrote some pretty negative stuff.

?A lot of people have had their say on this. I was getting stick before the tournament and I expect a fair amount when I get to Liechtenstein. ?I?m not Nick Kyme anymore, I am the guy who got a wildcard into the Bermuda Open.?

Internet chatter on the matter before the tournament saw Kyme refereed to as a ?clown? as well as a few suggestions that he should only be allowed to play in an exhibition match against a female ? and even then he would probably lose.

Although Kyme?s inclusion followed a long history of local players getting wild cards into large events, the rise up the rankings to 80th from his Bermuda Open appearance has added further pressure to his young career.

?There are people who are going to say I haven?t earned my ranking,? added Kyme, with a look of discomfort that would suggest that he is not best pleased with the negativity that has been attracted from so many quarters.

?I guess there is more pressure on me now when I play tournaments as I will need to prove to people that I am of a certain standard. Playing that match was the most fantastic experience for me, but as a new guy out there on the circuit still finding my way, I don?t really like need the hassle that I am getting from this.

?But, don?t get me wrong, I wouldn?t change a thing. Playing Peter Nicol was an amazing experience for me and I am grateful for all the help I got from people in Bermuda in getting me the wildcard and I hope that the people who watched that game don?t feel I let anyone down.?
