Robinson heading to Scotland

Jacobi Robinson could find himself sharing the new ball overseas in Scotland this summer, can reveal.

Division One side Strathmore Cricket Club have taken an interest in the Western Stars and Somerset Cup Match all rounder who returned figures of eight for 118 during last summer?s classic at Wellington Oval.

Robinson was a member of Bermuda?s victorious ICC Intercontinental Cup Americas Group squad in Toronto last August and also toured Dubai last January with the senior national team.

He also successfully completed cricket studies at the University of Port Elizabeth International Cricket Academy in South Africa in 2004, the same year he made his debut for Somerset in the annual mid-summer classic at Somerset Cricket Club.

Robinson, son of former Stars left-arm spinner Wayne (Spike) Richardson, could also become the first Bermudian since the late Nigel (Choppa) Hazel to represent Strathmore CC in the UK.

After teaming up with former Bermuda Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) president Alma (Champ) Hunt at Aberdeenshire Cricket Club, Hazel rose to legendary status at Strathmore in the 1950s and 60s.

He also represented Somerset in Cup Match, scoring 421 runs in 15 innings between 1940 and 1947.

The late Hazel?s Scottish-born son, Nigel Jr., currently opens the batting for Strathmore.

Strathmore executives are expected to make a final decision over Robinson ? grandson of former Social Club cricketer Eardley Richardson Jr ? in the next week or so.

?I have spoken with the club (Strathmore) and it?s now all up to them. But at the moment Jacobi?s chances look very good,? commented Arbroath Cricket Club executive and Scotland Under 15 national coach Clarence Parfitt from the UK.

?Things look very promising for Jacobi and this opportunity will give him great experience. And I think the more youngsters we get out of Bermuda the better.?

Pariftt and Cal (Bummy) Symonds ? Cup Match?s most successful skipper ? have both played an integral role in trying to secure a deal for young Robinson.

As it stands, a specially formed sub-committee have already met over Robinson and now await final clearance from top executives at Strathmore CC, established in 1854.

Should Robinson get the nod, he could find himself facing off against Stars? team-mate Treadwell Gibbons Jr when Strathmore CC host Arbroath CC at Lochside Park in a June 24 league clash.

Gibbons, recently named in the Island?s senior national squad to tour Trinidad next week, is due to return to the UK at the end of April.

Parfitt, delighted to see his young opening batsman fulfil a short-term goal by making the national team, encouraged all of Bermuda?s youngsters to take advantage of some of the wonderful opportunities that are now there for the taking.

?That was always his aim when he was over here last summer, making the national team,? he said.

?I would always tell him ?there is only one way to achieve his goal?, and that is to put the necessary time and commitment in. And apparently he?s accomplished that.

?The ball was in his court and it was all up to him. And it?s very good to hear that he has been included in the team. But now he has to put in the work.?
