Robinson heads for Shetland Games
Teenage sensation Laura Robinson is heading to Shetland to join Bermuda?s medal hunt.
The 16-year-old prodigy ? winner of the Bank of Bermuda Foundation Junior Open Under 19 section ? joins ladies Liz Martin, winner of the Fast Forward Freight national championship in February, and Denise Kyme in the Island Games team.
The men?s portion of the team for the July event is spearheaded by world number 68 Nick Kyme, who competed on Monday in the Virtual Spectator Bermuda Masters, fellow pro James Stout, Mel Caines and teenager Michael Shrubb.
The tournament will see a frenzy of squash take place in a hectic week, with the Island?s athletes competing in a team event as well as singles, men?s, ladies and mixed doubles.
?It?s going to be awesome,? said Robinson, working as a volunteer at the Masters this week.
?I?ve been away with junior teams all over the Caribbean but never somewhere like Shetland ? and it is great to be part of the senior team for the first time.
?It will be fun to play against people from a variety of countries ? I?m really looking forward to it.?
For Kyme, an elder statesman of international squash, it is an opportunity to claim a gold medal both as an individual and possibly as team number one ? and also a chance to play an important game with friendly rival Stout.
?I think it is a great opportunity,? said Kyme, who came within a referee?s call of taking a game off the world number one Thierry Lincou earlier this week.
?I?d like to think I have a chance of picking up a gold medal and also taking on Stout in that match ? I love representing Bermuda and I think we have a great chance of doing well.?
His mother Denise will play as number two for the ladies as well as organising Bermuda?s participation in the event.
?It should be great for Bermuda squash,? she said.
?It will be interesting because we have never played against any of these nations before ? and we can?t seem to find out anything about them on the Internet!
?I think it is also great that we are sending youngsters in the team ? I don?t think we have ever had a junior girl in the senior team before.?
The event, to which Bermuda is sending more than 150 athletes in a dozen sports, will be good practice for Robinson and Shrubb ahead of the junior Caribbean Area Squash Association championships in Trinidad just after their return from Shetland.
