Royals send women's champs crashing out

Though yesterday's FA Cup focus was on the men, it was the girls' competition which provided the shock of the day, Hemisphere Royals giving last season's champions a rude awakening.

Winners for the past five years and perennial cup finalists, Rude Girls found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-1 loss at BAA Field, Sandra Medeiros netting the winner in the second period of extra-time.

Earlier Medeiros had put Royals ahead only for Chebonne Furbert to equalise for Rude Girls.

Royals' captain Lori Murphy was understandably delighted after the match. “I guess we were underdogs,” she said. “But we played with a lot of heart and went in with the objective of being first to every ball.

“That is something we had not done in our matches with them last year. Today, we were the aggressors and we came out on top.”

Murphy said she hoped it heralded a bright future for her team.

“We are excited, we have been working on a lot of things this year, we have a new coach (Curtis Raymond) and things are moving forward for us,” she said.

In yesterday's other women's cup match, Prospect polished off Robin Hood 4-0 at Police field, scoring twice in each half.

Debbie Minors put Prospect ahead 1-0 after 15 minutes and then an own goal by Jen Griffin made it 2-0. TerryLynn Paynter put the result out of reach with the third goal after 54 minutes and Antoinette Williams finished off the Hurricanes with the fourth on the stroke of full-time.
