Rugby youngsters have a ball

The future of rugby on the Island will be in safe hands if yesterday's inter-school's clash between Sandys and Saltus is anything to go by.

The Under-12s came together at Sandys Secondary School in Somerset for the Bermuda Rugby Football Union organised event, with the home team running out 25-10 winners.

Sandys scored five tries to Saltus' two, with conversions forgotten about for the time being.

"Brian Toms has been holding practices at Saltus and Chris Naylor has been doing it at Sandys," said BRFU spokesman Bobby Hurdle.

"About two weeks ago they decided to have a combined practice in preparation for a couple of fun games. This just followed on from that."

The Union bought a set of jerseys for Sandys and Teachers' Rugby Club donated a set for Saltus and both teams took to the field in them yesterday.

"We played four quarters of 15 minutes to just introduce them to a full game," said Hurdle.

And the verdict?

"Their athletic ability is amazing," he said. "And it was good to see the progression that has been made just in the couple of weeks since we saw them last.

"When we were at Saltus, their two teams won the games, but Sandys have come along way and it's really encouraging to see."

Hurdle said it was also hoped to expand the number of schools playing in the near future.

"Warwick Academy have just started to do something and so we are looking to have another match before the end of the school term and involve the three schools," said Hurdle.
