Running series reaches climax

Most of the top spots have been locked away but the battle will be on for second and third in all age divisions when the KPMG Junior Running Series climaxes at the National Stadium this Saturday afternoon.

Mathew Fleischer is currently second in the boys eight to ten age division but Winton Woodley is hot on his heels. Neither has any chance of catching young prodigy Tre Simons though, who has won all four events in the Series to date.

Among the younger girls, Kiara Baxter currently holds second place but Kaitlyn Miller can overtake her if she can beat her on Saturday. Last year's runner-up Charlene Grant has already clinched the 2002 championship.

Both 2001 boys and girls champions stayed eligible for the 11-12 age groups so they were obviously going to be tough to beat. Too tough as it has turned out as both Shelicia McKenzie and Kor-von Tucker have already accumulated enough points in the Series to lock in first place.

Ellen Briers and Danlia Martin are in a close battle for second behind McKenzie while among the boys Harold Tre Houston has a slim chance of overhauling Kejaun Clarke and capturing second place.

Taijuan Talbot has four Series wins out of four so will repeat as boys 13-15 age group champion. Logan Alexander looks set to finish second with Sheldon McKenzie a likely third.

Only two girls can possibly complete the four events of five required to figure among the Series prizes in the senior age division. Tiara Simmons will be this year's Series Champion and Selina DeSilva the runner-up.

Registration for Saturday's events, which are being held in conjunction with a Bermuda Pacers developmental track meet, begins at 1 p.m. at the National Stadium. The entry fee is $3 with the two younger age divisions competing over 1,500m and the older boys and girls 3000m.
