Season ends in shambles
Less than a week after Bermuda cricket soared to even greater heights on the international front with Intercontinental Cup success in Canada, interest at the domestic level plummeted to a disappointing low as just two of eight two-day fixtures were completed over the holiday weekend.
Only the championship-deciding matches involving Premier Division clubs St.George?s and Bailey?s Bay and First Division Leg Trappers and Warwick went ahead as scheduled.
The remaining six games, for reasons varying from player shortage to umpire no-shows, never saw a ball bowled.
?The Board will have to wait until all the reports from the past weekend are submitted before convening to determine exactly what course of action, if any, is to be taken over the matter,? stated Bermuda Cricket Board second vice-president Allen Richardson.
?The Board is always concerned whenever games are not played or umpires do not turn up. But at this point in time we can?t offer any other comments until the reports have been handed in.?
Saturday and Sunday?s Premier Division contests featuring Willow Cuts and St.David?s at Somerset and the relegation decider between Social Club and Devonshire at Devonshire Recreation Club were both called off after none of the umpires turned up.
When contacted yesterday, Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association (BCUA) president George Francis referred to senior official Randy Butler who could not be reached for comment.
Western Stars forfeited their match against Southampton Rangers last week due to a player shortage.
In the only Premier Division match which did get underway, St.George?s defeated Bailey?s Bay by four wickets at Wellington Oval to retain their two-day league title while First Division Leg Trappers crushed Warwick by ten wickets at Southampton Oval to earn promotion to the top tier.None of the remaining First Division matches involving Somerset Bridge and Somerset Cricket Club at White Hill Field, Flatts and Cleveland at Lords and Police and PHC at Police Field were played.
It is understood that PHC and Police turned up with only a handful of players, the game between Flatts and Cleveland failed to start due to players attending the wedding of Cleveland spinner Peter Philpott while, according to source at the ground, the pitch at White Hill Field was not properly prepared.
