Seeds vie for place in final

Seeded players will be out in force today in the semi-finals of the ITF World Junior Ranking tournament at the WER Joell Stadium ? with no Bermudians having made it through to the latter stages of the singles events.

The number one seed in the Boys? 18 division, Corey Huggins from St. Vincent, had a tougher than expected route to the penultimate round after being taken to three sets by unseeded Bajan DeVard Wharton in the quarter-finals yesterday.

However, after losing the first set 5-7, Huggins stormed back to take the next two comfortably 6-1, 6-2.

Number two seed Patricio Alvarado from Ecuador, meanwhile, beat America?s Ben Maxwell 6-1, 6-3 while fourth seed Bryan Shwartz from the US thumped St. Vincent?s Kirk Da Silva 6-3, 6-1.

Another Ecuadorian, fifth seed Juan Martin Paredes defeated Rodney Carey of the Bahamas 6-0, 6-0.

In the Girls? 18 competition, first seed Analy Guzman from Guatemala, second seed Manijee Ashrafi, third seed Lindsay Clarke from the US and sixth seed Andrea Yacaman from Colombia have all made it through to today?s semis.

The Argus Open tennis tournament will take place from Monday, July 3 until Saturday, July 15 at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium.

Entering its seventh year, the Argus Open is one of the four important ranking tournaments in Bermuda and organisers are encouraging all those wishing to take part to fill in an entry form.
