Shark Sharpe star swimmer

Young Rebecca Sharpe was the star of the show at last weekend?s Summer Age Group Championships, with six event victories as well as three new age group records.

Sharpe is being touted as the next Kiera Aitken and shone all weekend even breaking a 19-year-old record in the100m freestyle. Her performance at the weekend caps an amazing season in which she has established an broken nine records, both locally and overseas.

In the 11 and 12 age group, she set a new record in the 100m freestyle with a time of 1:04.65, beating Kristina Williams? 1985 mark, in the 200m freestyle, she finished in 2:21.53 and in the 400m freestyle she finished in just under five minutes to complete her record-breaking weekend.

?Rebecca Sharpe would have to be regarded as the star performer,? said national coach Richard Goodwin.

?She stood out in the 11 and 12 age group in spectacular fashion, taking the age group title with six first place finishes and one second place. ?Her primary stroke is backstroke, but it was in freestyle that she displayed her power and ability this weekend, as she set three new age group records in the 100, 200 and 400 metre freestyle events and narrowly missed breaking the 50 metre freestyle record.

?There is every evidence that her swimming career could parallel that of our current Olympian backstroker Kiera Aitken.?

Meanwhile club coach Ben Smith, of the Sharks Swim Club, was also quick to praise the youngster?s achievements.

?Rebecca is a special talent that has worked hard throughout the season,? he said.

?She is a very aggressive and determined competitor and is compelled to be a much faster swimmer. The summer age groups put the cap on a very successful season, that saw her improve every time she swam. I am very proud of her performance and I know with continued commitment she has a bright future.?
