Sims improves in last round

He didn't get quite what he wanted but at least Michael Sims' final round of the Caribbean Open was under-par.

Having suffered two disastrous rounds last Thursday (second round) and Friday (third), the Island's top golfer entered the clubhouse for the final time with a respectable one-under-par 71 in Saturday's closing round in Freeport, The Bahamas.

His last round score at Our Lucaya Golf Resort left him with an overall total of four-over 292 and tied for 28th place.

The 23-year-old was hoping to finish well enough for his final score to be under-par but that was not to be. Still, his effort earned him $505.

Meanwhile, Argentina's Rafael Gomez stoically fought off John Bloomfield of Jamaica - as well as a bad back - to retain his Open title with a 13-under 275 and take the $9,000 top prize. Bloomfield, who equalled the course record (64) in the first round and was tied with Gomez after three rounds, was three strokes adrift in second.

Another Argentinian, Eduardo Argiro, and American Richard Terga tied for third with eight-under while Terga's compatriot, Tim Conley, finished joint sixth on six-under.
