Sims makes final round
Michael Sims produced another two-under-par 70 yesterday to advance to the final round of the Blackstone National Open in the USA, writes Gayle Alleyne.
The Bermudian ended with four birdies, two bogeys and 12 pars to match his first-round score and be four-under 140 after two rounds of the 54-hole New England Pro Tour event.
Having made the cut, Sims' attention now turns to making a run at the leaderboard in today's final round. His work will be doubly challenging as the rookie pro is fighting his way back into form after a break from competitive golf.
"The leader (Matt Donovan) is at ten-under and I'm four-under. I just have to go out there and be patient and pick my spots and - when I can be aggressive - make some birdies and go low. I have to play my game, tune out what other people are doing and get myself into contention.
"I'm just not very comfortable over my shots right now so I'm taking a little more time than I normally do," said the 23-year-old.
Sims said his second round could have been even lower had the luck gone his way. Instead he carded back-to-back bogeys on the 14th and 15th holes.
"They were close to being good shots but enough off to put me in a sticky situation," he explained, adding that 70 was "all right" given "pretty windy" conditions at the Blackstone National Golf Club in Sutton, Massachusetts.
"I felt a bit better today but still not as comfortable as I would like to. I'm not in my comfort zone but I putted well and I hit the ball fairly good most of the day. Just a few putts here and there needed to drop and it could have been a lot lower".
