Sims misses first Canadian cut

Michael Sims is out of the Barton Creek Classic in Austin,Texas as his Canadian PGA Tour debut got off to an inauspicious start yesterday.

Bermuda?s top golfer was three over par after the first two rounds of the $100,000 competition ? some 13 shots off the lead.

He shot a one over par 72 on the Crenshaw Cliffside course yesterday morning and a two over 74 on the Fazio course on Thursday.

Sims finished tied for 82nd place overall, well outside the top 60 and ties required to progress to the final two rounds.

He will have a chance to improve his performance when he plays in the Barton Creek Challenge tournament next week ? the second event on the Canadian PGA tour calendar.

Bermuda will play host to a new international junior golf tournament this summer.

Organisers of the Ross (Blackie) Talbot Charity Classic announced yesterday that they expected between 50 and 60 of the world?s top junior golfers to compete in the event - which is to be hosted at Tucker?s Point Golf Club between July 5 and 8.

?We sincerely hope that we can build this event over the next few years into a world-class tournament, one that will attract many of the future stars of the professional tour,? said the RBT Junior International Classic chairman Kevin Benevides.

The Bermuda Junior Golf Association have sanctioned the Classic - which will be a 54-hole strokeplay competition - as one of its official events.

The profits will be ploughed into local educational and youth programmes as decided by the RBT committee.

The tournament is to be sponsored by Tyco International Ltd.
