Singleton sets new Worlds goal

Within 24 hours of earning a 30th place finish in the Skeleton World Championships, Winter Olympian Patrick Singleton has already set a new goal ? a top 15 finish next year.

The Bermudian slider remains upbeat despite his lowly finish ? still no mean feat after only swapping from the luge last year.

Singleton blamed his lack of practice for the finish, his eight pre-tournament runs on the dangerous Konigsee circuit significantly less than the 50 to 100 runs that most of his competitors in the weekend event in Germany have under their belts from a year of World Cup competition.

"I'm happy, very happy," declared Singleton, whose final run of 50.87 seconds on Saturday was the slowest of his three outings on the circuit.

"For me qualification for this event was my target. I got here and that was what I wanted. It has been an excellent experience for me. I know now what I have to do to get into the top 20 next time.

"This event came too soon for me to put all the elements together but I know what I need to do to be capable of much faster times."

After a brief stop in Zurich, Switzerland, Singleton will move on to Lillehammer for a month of training before returning to Bermuda to work on fitness, and earning money, ahead of next season's competitions.

But the tentative venue for next year's world championships, to be confirmed at the governing body's annual conference in the summer, is Calgary ? a track Singleton knows well from his days on the luge.

"Hopefully they will stick with the provisional venue as Calgary is a track I think I can do well on," continued Singleton, who wore his new Speedo swimsuit during the weekend competition ? won by Canada's Duff Gibson. "I would be looking to finish in the top 15 next year, that is my new goal."
