Sluggo back at Stars

Top spinner Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock, who?d hoped to move to Southampton Rangers this season, has patched up his differences with Western Stars and will be staying at the St. John?s Road club after all.

Leverock?s planned move to Rangers fell through when the club failed to pay the $100 fee by the transfer deadline of March 31.

It seemed Leverock, a key player in Bermuda?s international commitments this summer, would be in limbo without a club.

He had a change of heart but his attempts to stay with Stars became a problem because many of his ex team-mates reportedly weren?t about to accept him with open arms.

But the problems have now been resolved following a club meeting at St. John?s Field on Tuesday night.

?Sluggo is playing for Western Stars this season. I can?t say if he will be playing in our games on Saturday and Sunday which is up to the selectors, all I can say about the matter is that he is back as a member of our senior playing squad,? said team coach and long-time player and full-time coach this season Arnold Manders.

?To be honest, I think everything was decided when the Board told him that he couldn?t have a transfer. That transfer set-up is not the greatest anyway and I hope they will find the need to change it.?

According to Manders, if Sluggo or any other player wants to move from one club to another, they should be allowed to without having to go through so much red tape.

He reckoned that the transfer deadline of March 31 is far too early, pointing out that it would be more logical for them to extend it right up to the week cricket starts.

?I would like to see a two-day window also implemented, that?s in case something like what happened to Sluggo came up again, there would be a period for the paper work etc. to be sorted out properly which will really make sense,? said Manders.

The suggestion obviously had some merit, with Bermuda Cricket Board executive Neil Speight suggesting that if the clubs felt that the transfer period needed some adjusting then they would probably look into it.

?I certainly wouldn?t rule out the Technical Committee reviewing the transfer policy during the year if the clubs felt that it needed to be looked at, who knows they may decide to keep it the same or they may decide to change it,? said Speight.

?To be honest though, it has worked pretty well for a number of years, and as things stand now once we have a policy then it?s a policy. We are pretty consistent, hopefully that allows full participation of players in cricket as well.?

The BCB feel that the mix-up involving Leverock?s transfer was none of their doing, the player?s move being blocked when Southampton Rangers failed to pay the $100 transfer fee in time.

Speight said: ?The transfer deadline is March 31 and the player needs to have his completed paperwork, which is the signature from his old club and the $100 submitted by that deadline. In some cases we get no paper work and some money and in other cases we get paper work and no money ? unless everything is completed we have to say sorry this is our policy.

?In Sluggo?s case as far as the Board is concerned he never left Western Stars. If all of the paper work and money is not received by March 31 you are not going to get your transfer.?
