Smith earns early debut for Revs

Khano Smith made a surprise debut for the New England Revolution ? just three days after starting training with the US club.

Smith, signed for the Major League Soccer club after scoring for Bermuda against them on their pre-season tour here, tasted four minutes of action on Saturday at the Gillette Stadium.

The lanky former Dandy Town Hornets striker, who was expected to only play for the reserves this weekend, replaced Taylor Twellman in the 86th minute of the Revs? 2-0 victory over Chicago Fire ? which keeps the Boston-based club top of the Eastern Conference standings.

And his weekend got even better yesterday when he scored his first goal at the Gillette Stadium, notching the only strike in a 1-0 win for the reserves also over the Chicago Fire.

Smith, who flew to the States last Wednesday after his work permit finally arrived, is already enjoying himself in his new life as a professional footballer, having quit his teaching job at Dellwood Middle School.

?My biggest asset is my speed and ability to take on defenders,? he told the Boston Globe this week.

?If I run in behind defenders they have to turn and catch me.

?It has been an easy transition to come in here after training with the team in Ecuador. I have watched every game and the team is very polished and hungry.

?The four national team players have given the team an edge. But I am going to have to wait my chance and eventually it will come. I am just trying to fit in and help the team where I can.?

And coach Steve Nicol, who is expected to use Smith mostly when US strikers Twellman and Pat Noonan are away on international duty, is expecting big things of his Bermudian import.

?Height is one of his attributes,? the former Liverpool legend said this week.

?He has great pace, which unsettles defenders, a great touch and he has scored great goals both for us and against us.

?We are not going to just lash balls up to him, but if we have to, he is capable of maintaining possession. If we lose forwards we are going to need people to step in.?

Shaun Goater, meanwhile, was unable to fulfil his wish of scoring for Coventry in his final league game for the club.

The Bermudian veteran played 22 minutes of the final day of the season 2-1 defeat to Crewe, replacing Dele Adebola but failing to notch what would have been a first league goal of a very frustrating campaign for the former Manchester City talisman.

Goater will now return to Reading to sort out the final year of his contract although the club have already made it clear he is not in their plans for next season.
