Smith grabs two silvers
Veteran Bermuda swimmer Chris Smith picked up two more silver medals on the final day of the Australian Masters Championships at the Olympic Pool in Sydney yesterday, bringing his haul during the long weekend meet to four silver and a bronze.
Seventy-year-old Smith was edged out by Jonathan Davies of Australia in the 100 metres breaststroke. Davies is currently ranked fourth in the world in the 70-74 age division.
The 400 metres Individual Medley gold went to Graham Johnston of Texas, the current world record holder. But Smith held off the Australians and took over 15 seconds off his Canadian record with a time of 7:29.99.
Johnston, originally from South Africa, competed in the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland, New Zealand, the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, the 1954 British Empire Games in Vancouver and was selected to represent South Africa at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia but was unable to compete.
He subsequently moved to the US and has been inducted into the Swimming Hall of Fame as well as breaking 25 age group world records in the last 18 months.
Warwick resident Smith and Johnston, as well as many of the Australian swimmers, are now moving to New Zealand for the ninth FINA World Masters Championships which starts this Sunday in the Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Games pool in Christchurch.
