The window of opportunity has again opened for some of the Island's aspiring young footballers.

With 11 of Bermuda's prospects currently undergoing trials in England, top women players Juanita Smith, Tamisha Darrell and Rickita Warner have all been offered full soccer scholarships to attend Darton Community College in Albany, Georgia.

The local trio left the Island last Thursday for Atlanta to continue what has become in recent years a fruitful relationship with local scholarship recruiter Michael Corday and his former collegian team-mate Ken Vielands, whom he once played alongside at the University of Southern Indiana.

Vielands is now head coach at Darton.

Smith, Darrell and Warner all play for local team Rude Girls.

Catherine Clarke, Stacey Babb and Waynesha Bean were the first Bermudians to receive full scholarships last year.

All have since moved on from Darton and enrolled in various neighbouring universities.

Corday says he hopes to see more Bermudians receive scholarships in the future.

"The women's programme at Darton is brand new. It only started two years ago, but already they are ranked nationally and in their first year they made the play-offs so they are doing really well," said Corday, a former Somerset Trojans stalwart.

"And it's largely due to the Bermudian girls," he added.

"If they continue to do well, then Ken will continue to draw from us.

"I would imagine that at least every three years we will be sending more players over for complete scholarships. Their accommodations are paid for, their tuition is fully paid for and all they have to do is pay for their own food and books.

"But it's a great opportunity for them and it does open doors for them to move onto some of the surrounding four- year universities."
