Somerset pair suspended
Somerset Cricket Club pair David Gibbs and Reid Jones were both handed suspensions after being found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute during the August 27 Premier Division KO Cup clash at Sea Breeze Oval.
Jones was originally alleged to have physically assaulted umpire Richard (Red) Burrows after the ill-tempered match, while Gibbs was alleged to have knocked down the stumps with his bat after being dismissed.
However, at a Bermuda Cricket Board disciplinary hearing on Thursday night Jones received a four-game ban for making physical contact (putting his hands on the official?s shoulders) with the umpire, while charges of holding Burrows in a headlock were dismissed as the incident was never documented in the official match report.
Under the current Code of Conduct, the former Somerset skipper could have received a ban of between ten games and life for committing a Level Four offence.
Gibbs, meanwhile, received a two-match ban for hurling abusive language towards the umpire, but had charges of knocking down the stumps with his bat dismissed as again the incident was not mentioned in the umpire?s official report.
Tempers boiled over at Sea Breeze with both sides unhappy at Burrows? handling of the match which Bay won.
Bailey?s Bay coach Noel Gibbons will have his day before the BCB next week to answer to charges of bringing the game into disrepute as he has also been summoned to appear before the disciplinary committee.
Gibbons is also alleged to have verbally abused the umpire.
The former Bay skipper was recently named in a 22-member local select that will compete at next month?s second annual Antigua and Barbuda Independence Cricket Festival in Antigua.
Both the Premier and First Division Knockout finals this weekend have been postponed by the BCB because of the threat posed by Tropical Storm Florence.
In a statement released yesterday, the governing body said the games would be held over until next weekend ? September 16 and 17 ? with the National Sports Centre having confirmed that the North Field will still be available.
Leg Trappers are scheduled to play Cleveland in the First Division final on the Saturday while Rangers will be chasing their fourth trophy of the season against Flatts the following day.
