CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Albie Morkel hit 43 off 20 balls and took two wickets for 12 runs Sunday to lead South Africa to a 19-run victory over England in the World Twenty20 tournament.

Morkel got rid of two of the most dangerous batsmen at the Newlands Stadium as England tried to chase down South Africa's modest total of 154.

He had opener Matt Prior caught for 32 just as Prior was starting to accelerate the scoring rate in partnership with Owais Shah. Prior had scored his runs off 31 balls, and, with Shah's big hitting, England appeared to have a chance.

South Africa's innings was punctuated by falling wickets, but Morkel bided his time and launched three consecutive sixes off the bowling of Chris Schofield in the 18th over to push South Africa's total to a defendable level. He hit one more six and three fours before he was caught for 43 off the bowling of Andrew Flintoff. Flintoff finished with 2-23, and Stuart Broad took 3-37.

South Africa's bowlers applied the pressure from the start, and Shaun Pollock took the wicket of Luke Wright in the first over and didn't concede a run.

Kevin Pietersen was beginning to settle when he had to rush to complete a single, and he ran into Pollock, losing his bat and not making his ground to be run out for 15.

When Pollock had England captain Paul Collingwood caught behind off the first ball he faced, South Africa had grasped an advantage it would never relinquish.

The partnership between Prior and Shah offered some hope, but first Prior departed, then Shah fell to Morkel two overs later for 36 off 31.

Flintoff tried, but fell for 17 to Johan van der Wath, and the task had become too difficult for the remaining batsmen.

Morne Morkel also bowled well, taking 1-20, but Pollock bowled his four overs unchanged to take 2-17.

South Africa's next game is against New Zealand in Durban on Wednesday.

Earlier, Brett Lee took the first ever hat trick in a Twenty20 international in Australia's nine wicket victory over Bangladesh.

The fast bowler ended with 3-27 after claiming three straight wickets in the 17th over of the Super Eight match.

Bangladesh scored 123-8 in its 20 overs and Australia replied with 124-1, with more than six overs to spare. Matthew Hayden scored 73 not out for Australia.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting won the toss and put Bangladesh in to bat.

Lee and the rest of the pace bowlers — Nathan Bracken, Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark — all produced too much speed and bounce for Bangladesh, which was unable to find the form that eliminated West Indies from the tournament.

Tamim Iqbal and Aftab Ahmed helped get the Bangladesh run rate at more than six per over, but that was never enough to hold off the Australian batsmen.

Iqbal made 32 off 40 balls, and Ahmed 31 off 34. Between them, the entire Bangladesh batting lineup managed just nine fours and one six. Lee dismissed Shakib al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza and Alok Kapali for his hat trick.

Bracken also had success with the ball, taking 2-14 in three overs.

Gilchrist and Hayden started the run chase aggressively, putting together a 104-run opening partnership before Gilchrist was run out for 43 off 28 balls.

Hayden smashed nine fours and three sixes.

Australia next plays Pakistan, and Bangladesh faces Sri Lanka. Both matches are on Tuesday in Johannesburg.

Daniel Vettori took four wickets to lead New Zealand to a ten-run win over India. New Zealand scored 190 all out in its 20 overs, and India ran out of time with 180-9 in the Super Eight stage.
