Bowl Trophy win for Island’s under-19s
Bermuda's under-19 rugby team finished their first international tournament with a bang, thumping Guyana 78-0 to win the Bowl Trophy at the Caribbean Championships in Cayman.
In what was supposed to be a close game the Island's youngsters got off to a flying start with Lubin Sousa scoring in the first minute after Colin Campbell had stolen the ball at a line-out, and they never looked back.
The under-19s ran in twelve tries in all, in a completely one-sided affair, with skipper Shauntino Simons kicking nine conversions. Guyana had no reply to Bermuda's dominant forwards, and quick backs, and rarely got out of their own half.
After Sousa had opened the scoring, Rory O'Kelly-Lynch, Olly Bassett, Patrick Richardson and Brynley Toms, twice, all crossed as Bermuda went 40-0 up by half time.
It was much the same in the second half with O'Kelly-Lynch and Bassett both grabbing their second tries of the game. Coach Herbie Adderley made a raft of changes, but still Bermuda piled forward with Donald Folkard, Tom Bassett, Andre Landy, and finally Mike Coles, all scoring.
"The boys did really well in the set pieces but lacked experience and fitness playing in this heat," said Adderley.
Bermuda lost only once during their trip, to Mexico, one of the top sides in the competition. But Adderley is confident that next year his side can do better.
"I don't think we are quite at the level of the top two teams, Cayman and Mexico, but we are definitely in the top four," he said. "And with the nucleus of this team returning next year the outlook is very positive."
Erica Woods' Great Britain Under-20 team missed out on a quarter-final place in the European Championships Division B in Macedonia and Greece.
Bermuda's Woods played 14 minutes of Great Britain's 64-46 victory over Austria on Saturday without scoring and missed two shots from behind the three point line.
The 17-year-old debuted for Great Britain in the Championships in last week's 71-59 defeat against Greece.
Last month Woods revealed she would be continuing her basketball education at Marshall University in West Virginia.
Golf starlets from around the world will descend on Bermuda for the Ross Blackie (RBT) Junior International Classic later this week.
More than 60 top junior players will showcase their skills at the Mid Ocean Club and Tuckers Point Club from Sunday July 19 to Wednesday July 22.
Chairman of the RBT Junior Classic, Kevin Benevides said: "This year's event promises to be even better with participants expected to come from UK, Europe, USA and of course our own Bermuda junior golfers."
