Squash players enjoy fine start

Bermuda started strongly winning 12 of 14 matches in the first day's play at the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships in Guyana.

It was almost 13 out of 14 with 11-year-old Jeffrey Olson losing an extremely close match against the local 5-8 seed Alex Arjoon. Olson was leading two games to one before losing the next two games 9-7.

This story was reversed in the Boys Under-17 with Iain Redford causing an upset by beating 5-8 seed Shane Slater from the OECS. Slater lead two games to one, 6-0 and 8-6 in the fourth game but could not close out the tenacious Redford who saved several match balls as he clawed his way to victory for Bermuda.

It was a perfect start for James Stout, Andrew Robinson, Graham Counsell and Robert Maycock who all recorded first round victories without conceding a point. Stout's performance was so perfect he didn't event concede a serve winning 27 straight rallies to clinch a berth in the quarter-finals.

Douglas Olson also caused an upset for Bermuda by defeating the 5-8 seed Nkosi Ross from Barbados. Apart from a small lapse in the second game Olson dominated the match winning 9-2, 9-7, 9-3 and secured a place in the quarterfinals.

Play continues in the individual event until the finals today with the team event being played from Wednesday until Saturday.
