Squash success for juniors

Bermuda?s junior boys squash team have reached the semi-final stage of the Junior Caribbean Championships in the Cayman Islands thanks to hard-fought victories over the Bahamas and OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States).

Late last night, Bermuda took on Jamaica in the first semi-final on centre court, although the results were not through at Press Time.

To get to the knockout stage, the Island?s five-man team of Andrew Robinson, Robert Maycock, Michael Shrubb, Jeffrey Olson and Iain Redford destroyed a weak Bahamas team 4-1 on Tuesday night before narrowly overcoming OECS 3-2 on Wednesday morning.

With semi-final qualification then secured, Bermuda?s coach Ross Triffitt decided to rest some of the Island?s key players in the final round-robin stage against Barbados, which resulted in a 4-1 loss.

Coach Ross Triffitt said yesterday he has been encouraged by the performances of his young charges over a demanding ten days of squash.

?While I cannot fault the girls in terms of their dedication and enjoyment, the boys have been stepping up to the plate in terms of results.

?Obviously there are some big challenges ahead, but I think we have an outside chance of winning the event ? although finishing anywhere in the top three would be a good achievement for us.
