Squash?s rising star
Robert Maycock (left) and Lee Beachill have both had good years. Since this picture was taken immediately after the number four ranked Yorkshireman claimed the Bermuda Open title last year, both players, in their own way, have made enormous strides. Beachill realised his dream and claimed the world number one spot in October and returns here for the Virtual Spectator Bermuda Masters next week as the number two seed while Maycock is setting the junior scene on fire. The Island?s Under 15 champion, Maycock then went on to win the Caribbean Under 15 title in Barbados in July before moving to Wycliffe College School, in England, last September. He was a member of his school Under 15 team which won the English National Schools Title in February and he has also enjoyed a string of notable successes in European Squash Federation tournaments, leaving him with a number 18 ranking in the standings. He also finished fourth in the Irish Junior Open, sixth in the Welsh Junior Open and third in the Czech Junior Open. Currently competing in Peru, Maycock started in the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association junior programme at eight and is considered to be one of the most promising juniors to graduate.
