St. David's set to take on Caribbean club champs

Cricket league champions St. David's are set to compete in the Caribbean Regional Champion of Champions tournament to be held in Trinidad and Tobago next May.

The competition, which will feature current West Indies Test players, will see league champions from all parts of the Caribbean vying for regional supremacy. Cash incentives have been put up for the top four teams.

Bermuda Cricket Board of Control initially received the invitation from their Trinidadian counterparts and the decision to invite the Islanders was unanimous as they swept all major honours and remained unbeaten throughout the past season.

BCBC secretary Charlotte Simons confirmed that the Board had received word from the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board of Control (TTCBC) extending an invitation for the Bermuda champions to compete in the event between May 26 and June 2 in Trinidad and Tobago.

St. David's have been slotted in Group A, which will also include the champions from Barbados, Grenada and hosts Trinidad. Group B will consist of Jamaica, Guyana and Antigua.

St. David's coach Clay Smith expressed optimism ahead of the competition. "I believe it will be great exposure for the younger members of the team," he said. "They will be competing against first class opposition giving them tremendous experience and assisting them in their overall development."

The Islanders squad, including Smith, Lionel Cann and the explosive Glenn Blakeney, has an abundance of promising youngsters.

Senior national team player OJ Pitcher heads that list along with Under-19 squad members Landro Minors, Delby Borden Jr, wicketkeeper Chris Foggo, bowlers George O'Brien Jr. and Shannon Raynor, Lawring Marshall and Frique Crockwell.

Team manager Delby Borden revealed that fundraising initiatives were already in progress to help pay for the trip.

BCBC president El James said: "St. David's are coming off of a very good season. If they can muster the finances I think it will help their team to go further and also help them galvanise and become more of a unit."

St. David's superiority last season was reflected by titles in the League, Camel Cup, Eastern Counties and the Champions of Champions.
