St. George's have concerns about travelling to Somerset

FINALISTS St. George's Colts and Boulevard met with the Bermuda Football Association on Wednesday to discuss switching the Dudley Eve final which has been rescheduled for Somerset Cricket Club next Tuesday.

The BFA altered the schedule for the tournament on Tuesday following the death of Dandy Town footballer Machai Campbell in a motorcycle crash, pushing that night's double header at Somerset back to yesterday at St. David's and rescheduling the final for next Tuesday night at Somerset.

It is understood one of the concerns of St. George's, in particular, is having to travel all the way to Somerset for a 7.00 match. It is also understood that club officials are concerned about having their young team travel all the way to the west end (many on bikes) to play a final in midweek.

St. George's president Neil Paynter, who along with Boulevard president Stephen Proctor, met with BFA general secretary David Sabir to "look at the best possible date".

Paynter told the Mid-Ocean News: "It wasn't so much going back to Somerset, we just wanted to meet to see when was the best date to play. They are supposed to give us a call."

With only First Division matches scheduled for Sunday, an option could be to play the finals then and reschedule the league matches.

St. George's will play the Somerset Trojans who edged by the Eagles 1-0 yesterday afternoon at St. David's. Boulevard, who also won their first two matches, will meet Dandy Town in the Premier Division final.

Yesterday's match was an emotional occasion for those involved with Dandy Town as Campbell was an up-and-coming young defender and talented Western Stars cricketer who recently travelled with the Bermuda A cricket team to Argentina.

Campbell was the third Dandy Town footballer killed on the road in the last few years, following the deaths of Jerome Belboda and Randy Swan. In 2006 St. George's lost three sportsmen, Derick Paynter, Travis Smith and Kevan Foggo, in the space of a few months to road deaths. Foggo was the nephew of St. George's Colts manager Kenneth Bascome who knows from experience what the Campbell family is going through.

"I called the talk show this morning and offered my condolences to the family," said Bascome. "Nobody knows how it feels until it hits you as an individual. My heart goes out to the family. I knew the twins, they used to come to my beach (Tobacco Bay). I feel for the family, in particular at this time of the year when you figure everybody should be in a festival mood and happy."

Added Bascome: "I tell them (young people) that as a young man coming along I did many of the things that they are doing now but the big difference now is the increase in traffic. I have five false teeth and 15 stitches in my face from moped accidents. I try to set a positive example and hope I have an influence on young people."

Five First Division matches are scheduled for Sunday, as St. George's again host Somerset Eagles at Wellington Oval in a clash between two of the promotion favourites. Eagles are three points behind St. George's but have a game in hand against X-Roads which could put them into a tie for first place. St. George's have narrowly defeated Eagles twice already this season, once in the league 1-0 and then on penalty kicks in the Dudley Eve when Eagles had the bulk of the possession and often looked the better team.

In other action on Sunday, St. David's will look to bounce back from their disappointing showing in the Dudley Eve when they host a Young Men's Social Club team that has slipped down to mid-table in the standings after an excellent start to the campaign.

Prospect and Ireland Rangers will both be looking for three points after they aim to climb up the standings. They are presently sixth and fifth and on the fringe of the promotion race. Somerset will be looking for a strong start to the second half of the season when they host X-Roads while Wolves and Paget meet at Devonshire Rec. in a clash between two teams near the bottom of the table. All matches will start at 3 p.m.
