St. John's Field given ultimatum by Government
Government has given St. John's Field, home of Dandy Town and Western Stars, until April 30 to get their facilities in proper working condition - or risk losing their lease.
As owners of the property Government has the right to terminate any agreement with a tenant, close down the facilities or offer it to another tenant.
But while confirming the directive from the Ministry of Works and Engineering, the newly elected president of Western Stars Calvin Blankendal last night assured that the club would meet the demands.
"We are very optimistic that the necessary steps will taken to meet with their approval," he said. "We are a new administration and we will need time to turn things around.
"But I would like to advise our members and friends that we are very, very optimistic and confident about getting out of this and meeting whatever requirements we have to meet regarding this matter.
"We are going to settle some internal and external problems first and then we will make a public statement about what is happening at St. John's Field."
The president said that the new administration had actually taken the initiative themselves to approach the Ministry about how it could improve such things as the toilets and other structural areas on the same day the Ministry sent a letter to their past president Cecil Lewis telling them to get their act together.
"It happened that way because we were just as concerned," Blankendal said. "The Ministry have said it's a structural issue, so it's certainly not a social issue we are dealing with right now.
"But the truth of the matter is that we have to work on many other things affecting the club, internal and external, to meet our own long-term satisfaction and we intend to do just that."
