Star batsman Tucker takes on new role
Prolific batsman Janeiro Tucker has been promoted to the rank of vice-captain of Somerset's Cup Match team.
Tucker, who holds several records in the annual classic, included among them, the record for the highest innings (186), appears to have been the natural choice to fill the void left by Dexter Basden's departure at the conclusion of last year's four-wicket triumph in Somerset.
Tucker continues to follow in the heels of father John, who is a former Somerset skipper.
"I think that it was an obvious choice, considering the fact that he's been skipper for Southampton Rangers for the past several seasons," said Somerset coach Jeff Richardson yesterday, confirming Tucker's promotion.
"He's already experienced a leadership role and I think that it is part of the progression of Somerset's team. He's going to be part of the future, so who better to take over from Albert (Steede) when he decides not to play anymore."
Richardson said Tucker accepted his new role with open arms.
"He accepted it without a problem. I feel that he has an idea that it was coming and obviously he's a good choice," added Richardson.
Looking ahead to today's final trial match, the coach said he doesn't foresee many changes being made to his team.
"But anything can happen. You can go into the day with a general idea of who you want to play. . . every selector has that in their mind. But something can happen which can throw a spanner into the works," he added.
Meanwhile, Somerset have announced their teams for today's trial match.
