Stars just one win away from the promised land
Western Stars will be crowned champions of the AT&T Wireless 50 overs Premier Division if they overcome bottom-placed Devonshire Rec. at St.John?s Field tomorrow.
Stars and St.George?s sit atop the table on 30 points each after six games.
Hasan Durham?s team have the slight edge in the title race however having secured the crucial head-to head victory over their closest rivals at Wellington Oval three weeks ago.
St.George?s and third-placed St.David?s fight it out at Lord?s this weekend, although the former have to win and rely on Stars slipping up against Rec. to claim the title.
Stars skipper Hasan Durham said yesterday that his team-mates have put the disappointment of defeat against Bailey?s Bay last weekend behind them and are ready to ?reclaim? the crown.
?We had a chance to wrap up the league title a week early against Bay and it was disappointing to fall short,? he said.
?But we?ve been very consistent in this league all season and I suppose we were due a slightly ?off? day sooner or later. But looking at this weekend, we?re the sort of side who thinks we can beat anybody on our day and as long as we get the basics right tomorrow, I?m confident that we?ll be earning some more silverware.?
Rec. coach Ricky Brangman ? himself a former Stars player ? is hoping his players can raise their level after a disappointing season.
?I am very disappointed with the one win we?ve had this season,? he said.
?All I can ask of my players is to go out there and do their best ? to try and raise their level and be competitive as possible.?
At the other end of the table, the relegation dogfight hangs in the balance.
With a whole host of scenarios possible, Willow Cuts (12 points) Bailey?s Bay (12 points), Cleveland (6 points) and Devonshire Rec (6 points) could all be consigned to relegation depending on the results this weekend.
According to Board officials yesterday, Cleveland?s victory over Willow Cuts on June 20, which would leave them on 12 points along with Cuts and Bay, is not yet official because of the failure of both teams to follow the accepted practice of sending the match scorecard to the governing body.
Cleveland play Bay at Wellington Oval while Rangers entertain Cuts.
In the First Division meanwhile, champions Social Club take on Leg Trappers at Devonshire Rec. while already promoted, second-placed Flatts are away to PHC at White Hill Field.
Police play Somerset Bridge at Police Field while the game between Somerset and Warwick, scheduled for Somerset Cricket Club, has been called off as Warwick have the bulk of their players away with Bermuda?s national youth squads
Warwick requested yesterday to have the game played at a later date, but new regulations brought in over the winter state that Warwick have automatically forfeited the game and maximum points will be awarded to Somerset.
Play at all games starts at noon.
