Steven's plans are far from Petty

If consistency, continuity and commitment form a strong basis for an efficiently-run organisation, then membership of Bermuda Triathlon Association appears to have put a man at the head of their governing body who has shown he possesses all those qualities.

Steven Petty was returned to the position of president for a second year at the recent annual general meeting and is already working on a full slate of local and international events for 2005. These include qualification standards for the World Championships in Hawaii in October, 2005, the Island Games, which are due to be staged in Ynes Mon in Anglesey, junior trips to North America and possibly the UK, and, looking ahead, the Commonwealth Games in 2006.

Petty has been the most consistent triathlete locally over the years, having competed in almost every Bermuda event since the sport was first staged here in the early 1980s.

Standing down at this year's meeting were vice president Karen Smith, the Island's top female triathlete, who amazed many by winning the Bank of Bermuda triathlon, the Shell triathlon and the National Olympic Distance triathlon this year after giving birth to her second child in the summer.

Smith plans to focus her attention on the World Championships in Hawaii in October and attempting to meet the tough qualifying standards for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Also standing down were treasurer Lisa Roberts and vice president Cora Lee Starzomski.

The full list of officers are: vice president David Lunn; vice president Jamie Brown; treasurer Dionne Diehl; secretary Darren Maksymetz; past president Charlie Duffy.

Alongside Steven will be his wife Patty who retains her position as the Bermuda Olympic Association Council representative and International Triathlon Union (ITU) representative. Known as a tireless worker for the sport, she is credited with negotiating the complicated qualifying standards and administrative red tape that resulted in Bermuda being represented, creditably, by Tyler Butterfield at the Olympic Games in Athens this year.
