Stout admits: ?I was outclassed?

Bermuda?s ?other? pro James Stout will be the first to admit he let himself down badly during his brief participation in his Island?s showpiece event.

The teenager, ranked 194 in the world, was drawn against the weakest of the eight seeds but failed to put in the performance expected of him ? going down in an embarrassingly straightforward game against England?s Ben Garner and winning just five points.

On a day when Bermudian lesser lights Nick Wiffen, Tommy Sherratt and Gary Plumstead battled to respectable defeats, Stout was the only one to come away genuinely disappointed.

?It was just one of those days,? said the 19-year-old, whose schoolboy errors handed victory to the world?s 46th ranked player, 15-2, 15-0, 15-3.

?I was just too laid back, I was too willing to allow my opponent to dominate the rallies. I should have tried to take control more.

?I never felt really determined to make that extra effort to get into a position where I could control the rallies.

?He was taking the ball early and dominated everything ? I was never allowed to settle.?

Stout seemed strangely diffident during the match, lacking the dogged determination needed against a strong opponent ? and that had been shown by his compatriots in earlier games.

This was an opportunity to shine on a big stage but Stout, currently training in Belgium, missed his chance to show what he is capable of in a worryingly short match ? he lost the second game to love in under seven minutes.

Stout had said before this encounter that he enjoyed playing in the background behind his bigger name fellow pro Nick Kyme, who takes on former world number one Peter Nicol in tomorrow?s main draw, and this all-too-brief stint in the limelight shows that perhaps Stout is not yet ready for the big time.

?I learnt a lot out there,? concluded a disappointed Stout.

?I learnt that these guys are competing at a completely different level. I went out there knowing that however well I played, this guy could wipe the floor with me.

?I wasn?t happy with the way I played. What happened to me out there has happened to a lot of these guys at some stage and it is about how you deal with it.

?I want to walk away from this and concentrate on improving my game and slowly work my way up through the rankings.?
