Suiting up for Somerset is Robinson's crusade
With Cup Match just around the corner, 18-year-old right-arm medium pace bowler Jacobi Robinson has only one thing on his mind - suiting up for Somerset's XI later this month at Wellington Oval.
For Robinson, who heads off to Canada with Bermuda's Under-19 squad today, selection would fulfil a long-awaited dream.
The gifted Somerset seamer hails from a family richly steeped in Cup Match tradition as both father Wayne (Spike) Richardson and uncle Jeff Richardson - Somerset's current coach - represented the west end in the annual classic.
Robinson hopes to keep that family tradition alive.
"I know that I've been struggling a bit this season with the ball, but it has been coming around in the last couple of weeks," he explained. "Hopefully, though, I can do even better before Cup Match and this will be my year."
The teenager was a reserve for Somerset in 2001 and 2002 and is coming off a solid Western Counties performance last weekend which saw him grab four wickets for 30 runs against Somerset Bridge.
"That was one of my better bowling performances for the year," he said. "I think I still have a good chance of making Somerset's Cup Match team. If I can maintain my fitness and get more wickets then I should stand a good chance."
Robinson followed up last Saturday's performance by grabbing another four wickets for 34 runs in a losing cause against St.David's at Lords on Sunday.
Despite the recent omission of key bowler George O'Brien from Bermuda's touring Under-19 squad, Robinson is optimistic the Island's youth team can get the job done in Canada and qualify for the ICC Under-19 World Cup Finals.
"We have other experienced bowlers around like Loren Marshall and Shane Hollis and also Jade Foggo and Rodney (Picnic) Trott in the team in addition to myself," he noted.
Robinson said he didn't feel any added pressure as he's now expected to carry much of the bowling responsibility in Canada.
"I don't really feel any added weight on my shoulders," he said. "There's no real pressure. I just want to go out there and get the job done."
Robinson was a member of Bermuda's Under-19 America's Cup team which finished runner-up to Canada on local soil in 2001.
