Sunderland strike 'special'

Bermuda's Shaun Goater finds room between two defenders to blast home Manchester city's third goal in their 3-0 demolition of Sunderland in Monday night's Premier Leauge match at the stadium of light. It was Goater's fifth league goal of the seas onand one that he considers among the best of his career.

If I was asked to say where the goal against Sunderland on Monday night came among those I have scored in my career I would say it might just sneak into my top ten.

I haven't actually seen it on television yet and until I was told otherwise I actually thought it was just another average Shaun Goater goal - and I've scored a lot of them over the years.

But even manager Kevin Keegan was praising it, so maybe it was a little more special than I thought.

I don't remember much about the build-up really. My first recollection is Eyal Berkovic heading it down to me inside the box.

From there I took a touch, with my back to goal and then just smashed it.

Actually, when I received it my first thought was to lay it off to someone. So initially I just wanted to shield it from the defender. But once I realised there was no-one there, I set it up for myself and just hit it.

After it hit the back of the net I ran to the City fans behind the goal and celebrated with Eyal.

If you saw the game on TV you might have seen us having a little conversation.

Eyal was actually saying to me that if I kept showing for him he would be more than happy to keep setting me up.

It was just symbolic of the relationship we have, one where we both bring the best out of each other on the pitch.

He really likes having me in the team because of the way I play. I predominantly roam up the middle and always try to make myself available to him and I think he likes that option.

When, say, Darren Huckerby and Nicolas Anelka play together he tends to find that on occasions they are both in wide positions.

He is the sort of player who likes to roll the ball around the corner and get behind their midfield. Once he is running at the defence in the middle of the park he can go right or left and can switch direction.

Normally, in such instances I am just in front of him and can be used as a wall and he likes that. He likes to loan the ball to people and then get it back and I am the sort of player that can do that.

It was important for me to get that goal. In the previous two games against Bolton and Middlesbrough I had not had any shots on target. While I had been happy with my overall performance I didn't really have anything to show for it.

Sometimes it is like that but on Monday night I felt I needed to test the 'keeper a bit more.

Sunderland just happened to be the right opposition for both me and the team.

They are struggling near the bottom and are low on confidence and it did not take long for the fans to get on their backs.

If the crowd had been more patient their players may have been more relaxed and might have proved more of a challenge. But as the game wore on, although it wasn't easy, we were able to take advantage of their situation.

That is two wins on the trot now and hopefully we are building some momentum and can start looking up instead of down.

We are away to Charlton on Saturday but then we have two home games on the trot, against Aston Villa and Spurs. It is vital that we don't lose, especially at Maine Road, and hopefully we will even be able to take all three points.

We believe we are a Premiership club but only at the end of the season will we truly be able to say we deserve to be there.
