Super sub Turner keeps Onions on top
MR Onions remain one point clear at the top of Commercial A Division after clinging on for a 3-2 win over Tuff Dogs on Saturday, two of their goals coming from substitute Dave Turner.
The first half was fairly even with few chances but the game livened up in the second period which saw a collision between MR?s forward Colin Keane and the Tuff Dogs goalkeeper which resulted in both players going off injured.
Turner replaced Keane and was soon brought down just inside the penalty area with Eoghan O?Dwyer scoring the resulting penalty.
That lead only lasted only a few minutes as Tuff Dogs equalised through Jeff Franklin when Onions failed to clear a free kick.
Onions took the lead again when Turner scored with an excellent diving header from an Andy Bray cross and it was Turner again who made it 3-1 with a shot from close range. Tuff Dogs scored their second goal with four minutes remaining when Franklin was allowed a free header from a free kick. Some frantic defending enabled Onions to hang on for the win.
With two games in hand, BAA kept up the pressure with a 2-0 away victory over St. George?s All-Stars via goals from Chris Worsick and Gary Stewart.
Key West lie third after beating PHC 3-2.
There were plenty of chances for Key West who went ahead through national team cricketer Kwame Tucker who came on as a substitute, scored two fine goals and then went off injured.
PHC?s Kyle Lightbourne slotted home two penalties while Key West missed from the spot. A goal from Webster Mills settled the match.
Dandy Town Roots fought back from two goals down to draw with Robin Hood at Southampton Oval. Hood took the lead through an own goal by Justin Robinson and then went 2-0 up from a 35-yarder from Gary Ray.
Roots were guilty of terrible misses in front of goal after dominating for the majority of the half.
The second half was much the same with Roots again being wasteful but just as it looked like Hood were going to take all three points, Roots scored two quick goals through Michael Wells and Darron Simons.
Roots then pressed for the winner but Hood held firm.
Two goals from Elliott Jennings helped North Village to a 2-1 win over Valley who scored via Roger Hall.
Valley felt unlucky not to get a point after appearing to get the ball over the line in a late goalmouth scramble only for the referee to rescind it after consultation with his linesman.
In the B Division, Hamilton Parish made up some ground on table-toppers Island XI, who had a bye week, with a 5-3 defeat of Pest Control. Sharing the Parish tally were Raymond Outerbridge, Corey Hill, Irving Burgess, Johnny Bean and Dwight Jackson. Jamie Matthews and Troy Crockwell were on target for Pest Control.
Prospect/Fire remained third after beating Vasco Mariners thanks to a first-half Carlos Caisey effort.
The Devonshire All-Stars/Somerset Bridge Peskies clash was postponed.
Division C leaders Somerset Extros found the going easy against a short-handed Wolves side as they romped to a 10-1 win at Shelly Bay.
Anthony Burchall grabbed a hat-trick, Kent Bascome and Everett Wellman netted two each while George Rodrigues, Gareth Lewis and Charles Fox all scored one apiece. Emanuel King got a late consolation goal for Wolves.
Action elsewhere in the C Division was thin on the ground. Extros? local rivals Dockyard Falcons remained second after picking up a walkover win over Warwick United who had just five players at White Hill Field. Dandy Town Roots C also picked up a default win over Prison Officers who were short of players due to a cricket tour.
