Swallows and Ravens leave the rest behind
The gulf between the strength of the teams at the top and bottom of the women?s A league was again demonstrated last weekend as Swallows and Ravens both stormed to victory over weaker squads.
The two teams have battled for top place in the women?s league almost without other challengers for the last three seasons and Swallows 7-0 shutout of Wildcats and Ravens 6-0 stomping of Canaries means their dominance shows little sign of waning.
Swallows? Sunday match against Wildcats actually got off to a slow start with neither team hitting the mark until 27 minutes into play.
Joann Wilson broke the deadlock for Swallows with an open-play goal and Swallows soon had a stranglehold on offence.
Scoreless Wildcats only earned one short corner over the course of the entire match which they failed to capitalise on. Comparatively, Swallows earned 14 ? converting two.
Jenny Chattock led Swallows? win with three goals while Yvonne Slattery had two and Hannah Ellison added one.
In their Saturday match against Canaries, alternatively, Ravens grabbed the momentum early and steadfastly held it.
Caroline Black opened the scoring in the third minute of play and by half-time the scoreline was driven to 5-0 with Black nailing a second and Emma Simmons, Ana Abend and Megan Troake each putting one away. Troake was back for the sixth and final goal of the match on a short corner in the 45th minute of play. Ravens earned 11 short corners ? converting three ? while the struggling Canaries failed to earn a single opportunity.
Swallows sit atop the A league table with 26 points at the moment while Ravens follow at 21. The next closest team sits 7 points below, Canaries at 14, while Wildcats have 8 points and Swifts just 1.
Canaries B squad also fell to Ravens on Saturday, 4-1.
Canaries were first on the board with Nicola Bird slipping away a short corner midway through the first half of play but Ravens found two goals before half-time courtesy of Anna Heard and Liz Gardner.
Alex Wheatley and Sarah Moule each hit the mark in the second half to seal the win.
Cardinals B picked up a win at Canaries expense as well with a 1-0 result on Sunday.
Denise Downey scored the lone goal.
And Swifts continued to look strong in the B league, with a 3-0 defeat of Swallows. Angela Dunstan added two goals toward the win and Yvonne Osborne one.
Bluebirds B collected three points with a 2-0 victory over Wildcats ? Eva Dillas and Liz Wright were the goal-scorers.
Meanwhile, Panthers held on to top spot in the men?s league with a 3-0 win over Upstarts on Saturday.
Jonathan Barritt led the effort with two open play goals and Matt Spencer chipped in for a third.
Second place Chameleons 3-1 win over Polecats added steam to their title drive, however.
Mark Finnigan grabbed two goals toward the win while Justin Freisenbruch added one.
Adam Griffin scored the lone goal for Polecats.
Panthers are holding top spot with 21 points, followed by Chameleons with 19, Polecats with 13, Upstarts with 10 and Rebels with 7.
