Swallows end their season in style

Swallows A team sewed up an unbeaten field hockey season last weekend with a solid 5-0 victory over the Swifts.

Play has been relocated to Saltus field for the final weekends of the hockey season and Swallows initially had to work hard for the final win on the unfamiliar pitch.

Shelly Clement found the back of the net from a short corner routine just before half-time to change the pace of the game however.

Swallows began to dominate in the second half, scoring a further four goals.

Karen Campbell pushed the ball past the Swifts' keeper to start the scoring drive.

Liz Osborne converted a cross from Trish Lorimer and Jenny Burrell capitalised on a defensive deflection to keep it moving and Clement rounded the game off with a cracking shot from the edge of the circle.

Cardinals A squad also ended their season with a victory, defeating Canaries 3-1 on Sunday morning.

With Canaries feeling their way through a new formation, play started slowly. Canaries were on the scoreboard first but Cardinals came out a stronger team in the second half.

Caroline Cash scored after a pass from Kerry Graham and Ana Anton and Maria Pichery both added goals to secure the win.

Swallows also kept their clutches on the B title with two shut-outs of the Swifts - 4-0 and 3-0 - in weekend play.

A sluggish Swallows' side took to the field in the first game to face immediate pressure from Swifts who attacked hard and earned several short corners. But Swallows woke up and Jenny Burrell made sure they had a 1-0 lead at half time.

More alert in the second, the Swallows put the match away with goals from Karen Turner, Jenny MacIntosh and Burrell.

Despite excellent defending by Swifts and the ever improving Christina Barnard's fine work in goal in the second game, Swallows again put the match away in the second half.

Karen Campbell broke the scoring deadlock and Sandy Cram and Burrell each added one for the 3-0 victory.

Cardinals B team added a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Canaries on Saturday.

Canaries defended well against the Cards' attack but junior Tiffany Calhoun secured the victory when a Gayle Thorne shot on goal deflected off the keeper's pads.

Bluebirds B split their weekend results, taking a loss at the hands of Orioles but a victory over Ravens.

After dictating the play for much of the game against Orioles, Bluebirds were unlucky to got down 1-0 after Orioles successfully broke away down the field for a winning goal.

Bluebirds' efforts against Ravens were more successful although Ravens attacked hard in the half and only bad luck kept them off the scoreboard.

Bluebirds found a way through the Ravens' defence to score twice after the break for a 2-0 win. Viv Taylor netted a great pass from Louisa Bussey and Kath Barker hit a powerful shot from the top of the circle.

Upstarts romped to a 4-1 victory over Rebels in the Men's league Saturday.

Rebels took an early lead when their captain got round his opponents' defence to score but Upstarts were determined not to go down without a fight and Martin Murphy connected with a bullet of a pass from John Daly to even the score.

But, the second half was all Upstarts, as they pressured the Rebels' defence with outstanding passing and clinical finishing for three goals in quick succession - Daly twice and Gary Fyfe - earning a 4-1 victory.

Chameleons had a 6-0 win over BCS Panthers while bidding farewell to Steve Moreton.
