Swifts shine on wet weekend
A rain-drenched weekend led to six postponements in hockey league play as those matches not drowned out on Saturday were called off due to muddy, slippery pitches on Sunday.
Only two games went ahead with the Swifts A and B teams securing wins over Ravens.
The A match was hotly contested in the first half with both teams making runs at the opposition's defence.
Ravens' Ana Anton and Emma Timperley launched attacking runs that seemed packed with potential but Swifts' defence were able to swallow the challenges.
Mandy Oliver of Swifts saw her drive from a penalty corner stopped by a defender off the goal-line in the 17th minute and neither team were able to break through before half-time.
Ravens came out punching in the second half as Caroline Black and Kerry Graham began to exert their presence on the match.
However, in the 67th minute Swifts' Kristan Law broke the deadlock, firing in Oliver's free hit from the right hand side.
The last few minutes saw Ravens throw everything into attack and force keeper Christina Barnard to come up with a series of goal saving efforts.
But Swifts walked off win the 1-0 victory, moving up to third place in the league table.
The Swifts B team posted a 2-0 win - their first victory of the season.
Keishae Robinson and Abby Hill provided first half goals that saw Swifts take command.
Swifts went forward early and often in the first half and were able to keep Ravens from mounting any sort of sustainable attack.
Moving to a more defensive posture after the break, Swifts held off the Ravens forwards as the clock slowly ran down.
