Teachers snatch victory Memorial Trophy match

The opening period was ragged but entertaining, with Chris Naylor crossing the line after a break from the Teachers scrum half converted for a 7-0 lead.

Further pressure from Teachers after a good passage of forwards? play resulted in the Select team killing the ball and giving the chance to Naylor to extend the lead with a penalty.

With the kick missed, Teachers failed to capitalise on their pressure.

Some nice defensive work from the Select resulted in a break-away try from the strong running Andrew Flint.

Teachers then turned and came back with some of their best rugby of the year with strong forward play and good interchanging between the backs and forwards which resulted in Devrae Noel-Simmons crashing over in the corner for a 12-5 at the break score.

A fast and frenetic start to the second half with both sides creating chances but nobody clearly dominating the play continued for ten minutes before Teacher?s regained some control with a quick penalty from David Porter exposing a gap in the opposition?s line handing the ball off to Kevin Walsh to score under the posts, Naylor hit the post with his conversion.

The Bermuda Select team came back very strongly, however, with a wonderful run down the touch line from Steven Husbands who created and finished his solo effort.

Some further good work from the Select forwards created gaps in the Teacher?s defence for the hard-working Peter Dunkley to cross the goal-line.

This tied the game at 17-17.

Teachers look tired but gave everything near the end ? gaining energy from the God?s above. A scrum in the opposition 22 was taken blind by Teachers? number eight Jean-Francois Mauvis, who sent David Porter into space to finish a well-worked try in the corner earning them a highly-entertaining 22-17 victory.
