Team-mate's `touch' throws doubt over Kyle's 100th goal
Kyle Lightbourne will be hoping English football chiefs don't decide to take away what, if it stands, was his 100th goal in league football last night.
The Bermudian striker `scored' the first of Macclesfield's two goals in the 2-1 victory over Oxford in Division Three.
Lightbourne, the club's top scorer in the league this season despite being on the transfer list, crashed in a 35-yard shot that at least one observer suggested may have nicked team-mate Matthew Tipton on the way into the net.
The 65th minute strike set the Silkmen on their way and Danny Whitaker doubled the lead before Oxford scored an injury-time consolation.
There had been doubts over whether Lightbourne would even play in the match at Moss Rose as he was said to be both suffering from mild concussion picked up in Saturday's loss to Bury and a hip problem.
But such is the bare bones situation at the club that he was patched up and sent out to do battle.
Lightbourne was involved in the best chance of the first half. Flicking the ball out wide to Tipton he continued on his run, the ball making its way to Whitaker before landing at the feet of the Bermudian whose powerful shot went inches by the post.
In the second period Lightbourne turned provider, pulling back a ball from the byline that Chris Priest was just unable to apply the killer touch to. Shortly after came the kind of goal that Lightbourne is becoming synonymous with.
The stadium announcer credited Tipton with the final touch but reporters gave the goal to Lightbourne - either way it was worthy of gracing a far better stage.
Manchester City boss Kevin Keegan has seen the funny side of the over exuberance that saw Shaun Goater suffer a knee injury celebrating the victory over Birmingham at the weekend.
City won 2-0 - their first win on the road all season - with Goater's strike partner Nicolas Anelka sealing the victory in the final minutes.
Relieved to have bagged three points which helped City in their battle at the wrong end of the Premiership table, Goater kicked out at an advertising hoarding and in so doing damaged his knee.
The injury was such that he was forced to ask Keegan if he could come off and Darren Huckerby replaced him for the final moments.
An examination on Sunday revealed no lasting damage and Goater is expected to be fit for Saturday's game with West Brom.
"Goat's fine but we have removed all the hoardings from the training area," quipped Keegan. "I don't think we are insured for that kind of injury!
"We have all seen the funny side of it but it does show you how easily you can hurt yourself. I know it was only a minor thing but it was enough to take him off on Saturday."
