Teen Sasha earns world ranking
Tennis prodigy Sasha Fisher has earned herself a world junior doubles ranking.
The 14-year-old booked her place in the International Tennis Federation listings to be published this week after reaching the 18 girls' doubles quarter-finals in an ITF tournament in Trinidad last week.
Fisher teamed up with Joanne Surouse of Aruba and they went down 4-6 in the third set to a Trinidadian pair in the last eight.
Her two sisters also made their mark, Kara Fisher reaching the semi-final of the 14s singles before losing to eventual winner Nicole Agostini and Zoe Fisher reaching the quarter-finals in the same age group. Zoe and Kara also teamed up to reach the final of the girls' 14 doubles.
Sasha Fisher won the girls' 14 singles in the same tournament last year and although she was young enough to defend her title in the same age group this year, she opted to play in the 18s instead.
One reason for that decision was to try and gain a world ranking, the other being to give herself tough preparation against older opponents for the Caribbean Junior Developmental Championships in St. Vincent this week.
There she defeated Rachel Romero, of the Netherlands Antilles, yesterday 6-0, 6-2.
Her Bermuda team-mates in the tournament in Kingstown are Ashley Brooks, John Masters and Kris Frick. Masters won 6-0, 6-0 against Aaron Crichton of St Lucia, while Frick won 6-3, 6-3 against Brent Kueitunl of Trinidad. Brooks, however, lost the first set of her match against Jo Ann Banaerde of Surinam 7-5 and was 2-2 in the second when rain halted the clash.
