Teenaged stars gearing up for epic challenge

Stefan Kelly

Teenagers Malachi Jones (17) and Stefan Kelly (18) could form one of the youngest new-ball partnerships in World Cup history in the Caribbean next month.

The two budding fast bowlers were yesterday chosen among Bermuda?s historic World Cup squad that have been pitted against powerhouses India and Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Group B.

Both youngsters impressed earlier this month in Kenya during the World Cricket League. And undoubtedly national coach Gus Logie will be hoping their rich vein of form will spill over to the World Cup in Trinidad next month.

?It?s always going to be a challenge for youngsters involved in a World Cup. But the temperament shown by these young men so far is very impressive,? Logie said.

?The senior players in the team are the ones who are going to carry the brunt of the burden ? they just have to do what is required of them at the time. But we are looking to ease them into that level of competition and hope that the experience will be used to their benefit as we move forward.

?They will learn lessons, and at the end of the day have everything to gain. All they have to do is be comfortable in their own ability and just do what they have been doing over the past couple of years. And hopefully in the future they will become the experienced young men that we will be looking for come 2009 (ICC Trophy).?

So far Jones has collected five wickets in seven ODI?s at an average of 50.00 and Kelly six wickets in six games at an average of 32.66.

Both young men said yesterday they were looking forward to the challenges which lay ahead and are optimistic they will rise to the occasion.

If chosen to play during the World Cup, Jones will become the second youngest player to ever debut in the cricket spectacle behind former Sri Lanka all-rounder Sudath Pasqual.

?This is definitely a once in a lifetime experience, and I?m looking forward to getting the most from it,? the Berkeley Institute student said. ?I want to put my best foot forward and I?m just happy to have been selected.?

Last summer Jones became one of the youngest skippers to captain a local club side to a major championship (Premier Two-Day League title) in the absence of Rangers skipper Janeiro Tucker.

He also debuted for Somerset in Cup Match before being elevated to the senior national cricket programme to cap off a magical 2006 season.

?I just intend to take things day-by-day, get used to the environment and just concentrate on playing my game,? he added. Should the need ever arise, Jones will have Tucker ? who has every confidence in his Rangers? team-mate ? to look to for reassurance on tour.

?I think this is good for Malachi who worked very hard to earn a place in the World Cup team. This is the biggest step he has made in his life, and hopefully he can carry on where he last left off,? said Tucker, who is fast returning to form with the willow.

?I think all of the the hard work and dedication, Malachi?s love of cricket and help from his old man (father Olin Jones) and playing at Rangers (Southampton Rangers) as a youngster with all of the senior players has really helped him out of lot.?

Kelly, who turns 19 in August, also looks forward to the big occasion in Trinidad.

?I look to gain a whole lot of experience from the World Cup to benefit me further so that I will know what it takes for me to get to the next level and which part of my game I will have to improve on if I want to become a professional cricketer,? he said.

Kelly, who could become the fourth-youngest player to appear in the World Cup, was not a part of the national squad that qualified for cricket?s premier showpiece in July of 2005.

But a memorable five-wicket haul (five for 23 off 4.1 overs) against Namibia in England during a ICC Trophy warm-up match signalled his arrival on the international cricket stage.

The Oakham School student also made his debut in Cup Match in 2005.

?I?m just going to try and take it like I do every other game,? Kelly added.

?I?m just going to try and keep to my routines and try not to get worked up too much and stay focused on what I?m doing.?
