The coach who came in from the cold

Pall Gudlaugsson could be on the verge of completing a rare hat-trick ? coaching a third different club in two seasons.

The Icelandic football coach, who coached the Faroe Islands to a 1-1 draw in a 1992 International friendly against Israel, is currently involved in discussions with top brass at Somerset Eagles less then three weeks after being sacked by Paget Lions, Somerset Bridge Recreation Club officials have confirmed.

?We haven?t sat down formally with him as of yet. But he has given verbal indication that he is interested in helping out with the team,? Bridge executive Marc Bean told

The ex-pat coach was also sacked by Devonshire Colts after overseeing one match at the helm at the start of the 2004-05 football season.

However, Gudlaugsson?s past coaching trek record on local soil doesn?t seem to bother Bean in the least.

?People have a tendency to become vindictive and spiteful but I feel that if a person has a willingness and is seeking an opportunity then it?s a matter of how they can best fit into our club structure,? he said.

?We don?t have a closed door policy at Somerset Bridge. We?re open to anyone and this doesn?t just apply to Gudlaugsson.?

According to Bean, the fully certified personal fitness instructor was keen earlier this year on taking over coaching duties at White Hill.

?He had a meeting with the players at the club, but then chose Paget. He was actually offered the coaching position at the beginning of summer,? he confirmed.

But lightning would strike twice for Gudlaugsson whose services as coach were terminated amid differences with club officials and a handful of players, among them a vocal Leroy Stevens.

Bean continued: ?After what he went through at Paget he has subsequently re-approached us indicating that he is interested in being involved in football at Somerset Bridge.

?We are presently at a rebuilding stage and looking for as many hands on deck as possible because more hands make less work. And anyone who wants to come onboard and assist in working in specific areas are welcome, even in terms of helping to develop our youth programme which is fundamental in our plans over the long term.?

When contacted, a settled Gudlaugsson ? who also coached in the Icelandic Premier League ? told ?I?d be honoured to help them out in any shape or form. They?ve seen my CV; seen what I?ve done and I just take this as an honour to go up there and coach.

?I?ve had very positive meetings with Bray Saltus (Somerset Bridge president) and they do have a structured programme up there. And I would love to help them out in anyway I can.?

Meanwhile, Somerset Bridge chief Saltus, added: ?He has informed us that he is interested in coming onboard to coach in any capacity. I have no problem with him joining ranks as long as the existing coaching staff are comfortable with him coming onboard.

?He was the individual I had tried to get at the beginning of the season. He was up here talking to the players but declined the offer due to personal reasons.

?I think Pall has extremely good references and is definitely a qualified individual who really loves to coach. This is what he really wants to do and he?s not looking for a big pay cheque. He?s just looking forward to utilising his talents in some shape or form while he?s here on the Island and our coaching staff have shown open arms and he?s definitely welcome to join our club at any time.?
